I'm not much of a cook. In fact, I hate everything about the process. I sometimes watch cooking shows with my dad, he is a great cook, and watch the passion others have for cooking. The food always looks good, and it usually makes me wish I did have this passion for the culinary arts. But alas, I do not not. However, far be it for me to deprive our children of an

First, we took the recipes and simplified them down to mere pictures. (Our kids are too young to read.) Then, we premeasured all the ingredients. For older children, you might let them do the measurements themselves. We printed a set of pictures that corresponded to those on the simplified recipe and placed one in front of each ingredient. As our kids began to follow the recipe, they could match the pictures of needed items with those placed in front of the ingredients. Then, they simply followed the recipes.

We began with the sugar cookies as they needed to chill in the refrigerator. Then we made the chocolate chip cookies. After nap time, we cut and decorated the sugar cookies. Then we bagged them up, two per bag and delivered them to Ashton's dad's school. We let the kids hand them out to the other teachers that worked there. After snacking on a few ourselves, of course. Our kids are currently at an age where they are driven by their selfish desires, so we take every opportunity to force them to share and give back, hopefully instilling a sense of generosity in them somewhere.

Sugar Cookies


1 cup of butter or margarine softened

1 1/2 cups of confectioners sugar

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

2 1/2 cups of flour

1 teaspoon of baking soda

1 teaspoon of cream of tartar


1. Mix thoroughly: butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, almond extract.

2. Blend in flour, baking soda, cream of tartar.

3. Cover.

4. Chill for 2 to 3 hours.

5.Roll out dough.

6. Cut into shapes.

7.Sprinkle with sugar.

8.Bake at 375 degrees for 7-8 minutes.

9. Let cool.

10. Decorate.


Chocolate Chip Cookies


2/3 cup margarine softened

2/3 cup shortening

1 cup of sufar

1 cup of brown sugar

2 eggs

2 teaspoons of vanilla

3 cups of flour

1 teaspoon of bakinf soda

1 teaspoon of salt

12 ounces of chocolate chips


1. Mix all ingredients together.

2.Drop by spoonfuls onto the cookie sheet.

3. Cook for 8-10 minutes at 375 degrees.
